What is the truth of Love?
Love makes no judgement,

Love asks for no payment or return,

Love is unchanged by circumstance, consideration or consequence,

Love is the recognition of oneness of being.

As I think of my relationships with others; parents, child, wife, ‘lovers’, I bow my head, which of these is untainted by conditions and fickleness? How much less constant have I been with friends and acquaintances? Which of us can say we have done better? And which of us does not seek to excuse or deny our own weakness and foolishness?

I have loved in part and in poor understanding, and yet, if I do not forgive myself that judgement I do not love myself and if I do not love myself how am I to love others?

Let me start at the beginning.

Two ideas show the need for this article on this website. First, even a brief look at Reincarnation shows immediately neither God nor Nature created such a place or condition as Hell. If there is a loving God who created being, no honest mind possessed of true perception could conceive of that God punishing any part of his creation, or creating a place of torment, or permitting a ‘Devil’ to preside over it and tempt people into ‘damnation.’As this is the case, a great deal can be said against the supposed truthfulness, piety and love for God of religious leaders and religious writers who, through dishonest self-serving, or through blindness to the nature of their deity, have sought to mislead us all. Second, the Western World today seems filled with a great deal of stress and lack of self-esteem; it is the source of much unhappiness and distress which is stoked up and expanded by government, modern management values and the media, all of which seem to wish gleefully to draw us into their own sense of fear and inadequacy.

It is very simple, and profoundly true, that the Universe is governed by two principles; the first is that of Love, which is the binding force which holds everyone and everything together, it is the very nature of existence itself; and, that being the case, it is inconceivable that the creation of existence was impersonal. Love cares, and in caring it is necessary to have a carer, a feeling, empathetic, understanding being, the motive force which makes existence, as we experience it, possible. The second principle is that of Fear, which is the falling out of connectedness of any part of being from the rest of beingness. In ignoring Spirit, and in forgetting our own existence in past lives, it is easy to feel ourselves isolated and exposed, prey to the winds of chance. Our response to this is to become absorbed by a concern
with self, making us ever more isolated and so ever more fearful, in a vicious spiral which can only be described as a self-created Hell.

Of course a question arises, a question as old as Humanity: if God and existence are Love, how could a loving God allow us to fall into the Hell of isolation and the suffering and even despair which goes with it? The answer, it is said, is the World we inhabit is an experiment; we are given Free Will, and a limited power of creation which goes with it. It is for us to choose what we want, we can go away from connectedness in the interests of knowledge, establishing our own authority and identity, even establish a (seeming) independence from God. We have permission to deny connectedness with others, even connectedness with our true selves and, of course, connectedness with the source which created us. To do this we need the further gift, to tell lies to others and ourselves. To most of us the lies we tell ourselves are the most critical; we would often die, certainly witness the destruction of countless others, rather than admit the Truth. Once this course has been taken nothing is more important than sustaining the lie with which we identify and in which we invest our very being. The truth, of course, needs no defence and seldom receives one. This dishonesty, created by the Ego of our conscious minds, isolates us from Love and what Is.

Those caught in rigid thought structures, especially those who feel they have achieved any power or importance in the world, will resent, reject and belittle these ideas; the liar cannot stand to hear the truth.

We are taught lust is love; therefore the young, being attractive for procreation, are more beautiful than the old. They are not.

We are taught some more deserve to be loved than others, that the ‘good,’ the famous or the celebrated are better. They are not.

There is a lie given a vicious twist by Henry VIII, to excuse the destruction, during the Reformation, of the welfare system which had been maintained by the Catholic Church. The lie is that some people are more deserving than others; it is a lie which still bedevils the benefits and welfare system in the U.K. today.

There are lies that love of country should lead to unquestioning obedience to government, and that one country or culture is better than another.

There is the lie that what you do is more important than what you are.

In 1963 John Profumo had to resign from government because he was found to have lied to Parliament. Today it would be a matter of surprise if any member of government told the truth, so little do we love the truth, ourselves, or those we seek to deceive.

All this deception distances us from love; it causes dislocation and degeneration of performance in every area of life, public and private. Most of all, it causes a horrifying rise in mental illness and physical, stress related illness in the Western World.

Teaching Psychology in a college I was so distressed to find grave errors about stress management in standard textbooks that I wrote an article for Gather, which you can find here –
Stress and Management. That article gives amazing examples of what you can achieve through Love of your-self and love of what you do; it also points to the humiliating failure and stress of attempting to succeed without love.

The reason is very simple. The World responds to the influence of Love, when you have little love for yourself and what you are doing, and when your connectedness to the rest of creation is obscured, you can have little influence or effect. When you love yourself and what you are doing and are connected with creation you are unstoppable, nothing is impossible. It is summed up in an old saying, the scale and demands of which are not often understood
– Love Conquers All.

In an episode of the Blogtalkradio show, 'Reincarnation, the Secrets of Past Lives' (see the links and archive on this site)my wife Christine and I set out what I think is very important about Love and what it can and should mean in your lives, not just your present life, and not just Love in relationships, but love of what you do, your condition and place, and most of all yourself.

Please return from this page to Reincarnation and explore your past lives, look at them with Love and know who you are. Return to the page on Spirit and note how you are loved and not judged. Return to the page on Reality and use the nature of what is to achieve fulfilment.

Just a little whimsy?
