This page arises from a Blogtalkradio show to which Doug Kelley, founder of the Metaphysical Church of Humanistic Science, was kind enough to contribute; it looked at higher vibrations of spirit, imagination and inspiration.

For a true study of Metaphysics we must look at existence at higher frequencies of vibration than the physical. This means the levels of Spirit in which we, as human beings, also share. How do we get to higher vibrations? We must, I guess this much is obvious:
try to clear our minds, of negativity, all fearful or aggressive thoughts,
we must not be too tired or preoccupied, but rather be relaxed, with open minds,
and we must follow our imagination, wherever this takes us, without forcing it or blocking it.
When we achieve this, there is the possibility of the imagination, which comes from ourselves,
being answered by inspiration, which comes from the higher levels of vibration.

There are still many people who prefer to deny these higher levels of vibration or claim that they have nothing to do with us, yet the evidence is entirely against them, unless they want to deny the twin experiences of inspiration and imagination.

In getting to know the truth, the first step is to realise (perhaps) most of your being exists at these levels and this is evidenced by the thoughts and feelings which you cannot ascribe to physical sensation. As you explore this level of your being you discover meaning, and life ceases to be an empty mechanical process. It is then only a small step, hardly worth mentioning, to realise that when your physical body dies that part of you which exists in higher vibrations doesn’t end. Welcome to the World of Spirit; what a relief to realise it is your spirit which sustains your body, not the other way around.

At the wider, and necessary, level of how we see our own existence, the next step is to apply imagination to the question, What do most of us do when deprived of the body we inhabit? The answer, of course, is we find another body (or rather wait for an appropriate new body to be generated). Now we have made the small step to Reincarnation; and once we have achieved this we can see that looking at existence from the perspective of our present life is like looking at the World from inside a room with no windows, we assume the walls of the room bound the Universe. When we get to know our past lives we fling open the door of the room and can see to far horizons.

As yet we are still in that little room of our present life, how  do we open the door?

All the time we are bombarded by thoughts and feelings. Some of these are from our bodies: I feel cold, I feel hungry, and I’m in a high place and feel scared when I look down. But there are other thoughts and feelings, about beauty, politics and a whole range of things that don’t come from our bodies. From whence come these?

The beginning of my own psychic mediumship was when I realised there were thoughts and feelings entering my mind which could not be my own. Something else was coming into my ‘stream of consciousness’ and that something else was communication from Spirit: it happens all the time, but we don’t notice because we take it for granted that everything in our mind comes from that little room.

I am going to call that something else Inspiration (from the Greek, to breath-in life – the opposite of expiration, which is to breath out the spirit of life). I am going to venture that there is no true advance in human knowledge, and there is no true art or creativity, which does not come from inspiration, from that external communication from Spirit. The greatest scientists and artists, from R. L. Stevenson to Einstein acknowledge it.

So what of Imagination?

If Inspiration comes exclusively from outside that little room, imagination at least starts off from inside it.

The conscious mind has no difficulty in telling a lie. Let me tell you a story about somebody – but that somebody doesn’t exist, that person is a fiction. This particular lie is the very basis of novel writing. Suppose you sit down to write a novel; you invent characters and situations, and a plot which is the story of what happens, all this comes from your conscious mind. You want this to seem as real as possible, so your imagination reaches out – beyond the confines of your little room. If you’re really lucky your own spirit (your higher self) reaches out to other spirits, if you’re really, really lucky, they take an interest and feed to you thoughts and feelings which you put in your book – this is now Inspiration and, I repeat, all great art and innovation comes this way.

Back to Imagination, it starts off in your little room where your conscious mind is. Your conscious mind cannot exist without some part of your spirit, in fact the conscious mind is only a product of your spirit (though your ego would like to tell you otherwise – that is the subject for another page). It is only a tiny step for your conscious mind to reach the higher vibrations of your own spirit; it is called an altered state of consciousness but it is actually an altered state of awareness, in which your consciousness steps back. As you reach awareness of your spirit you can access what your spirit knows, from its own past lives and even experience beyond those lives. Whether in doing this you go beyond your little room depends on definition, particularly as to what you mean by self. In any case, my argument here is it may be a shorter reach to access your past lives and prove (to yourself) reincarnation than it is to become a psychic medium, or write a great novel.

It is because it is so small a step to reach your own spirit that past-life regression can easily be done (and commonly is) by hypnotherapists. All the hypnosis does is to cause your conscious mind to step back or step aside, nothing more, what comes through is already in your own spirit and no mediumship is involved.

In forming my own understanding of this two books were helpful:
Brian Inglis, Ruth West and the Koestler Foundation (1989) The Unknown Guest, Hodder and Stoughton, London
Ronald Shone (1984) Creative Visualisation. Thorsons Publishers Ltd., Wellingborough.
Creative Visualisation is particularly helpful, practical, and well diagrammed.
